Flying Private to Vienna This December

4 November 2026 Fast Private Jet Blog

Vienna's Christmas markets begin opening from 6 November 2026, and the Vienna State Opera has a dense December programme, according to the Austrian National Tourist Office and the opera house's own calendar. For anyone planning to fly private jet to Vienna this December, the city is at its most usable: short daylight hours, a compact old town, and a hotel and restaurant landscape that rewards knowing exactly where to go. This guide covers how to arrive, where to stay, where to eat, and what is actually worth your time.

Arriving in Vienna by Private Jet

Vienna International Airport (VIE), in Schwechat, is the city's only practical jet airport. Private aircraft use the Vienna Business Aviation Terminal, also called the General Aviation Centre, where Jet Aviation has operated the FBO (fixed-base operator, the dedicated private aviation terminal separate from the commercial concourses) since 2014. Jet Aviation's own site confirms the FBO runs 24 hours, with its ground office staffed from 07:00 to 22:00, and offers passenger, crew and aircraft handling, refuelling, de-icing coordination, and customs and immigration assistance.

The exact driving time from VIE to the city centre could not be confirmed from an official source at the time of writing. Vienna Airport's own site lists the City Airport Train and Vienna Airport Lines buses as the standard links into town, and the City Airport Train's own site gives a nonstop journey of 21 minutes to Wien Mitte. Confirm current transfer options and timing with your handling agent or through our own Airport VIP Transfer service when booking.

Booking the flight itself through a private jet charter is worth doing earlier than usual for a December arrival.

Where to Stay: Vienna's Leading Hotels

Forbes Travel Guide's own Vienna destination page currently rates no hotel in the city Five-Star; Hotel Sacher Wien, The Ritz-Carlton Vienna and Rosewood Vienna sit at Four-Star, and several well-known addresses, including Hotel Imperial and Park Hyatt Vienna, appear only as "Recommended," with Mandarin Oriental Vienna shown as "Soon to be Rated." This matters, because it means this guide's hotel recommendations rely on Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) and Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) membership rather than a Forbes star.

Hotel Sacher Wien

Hotel Sacher sits directly across from the Vienna State Opera on Philharmonikerstrasse, a position few hotels anywhere can claim. It is listed as a member hotel on Leading Hotels of the World's own site, which also confirms the property holds 3 MICHELIN Keys for 2024, 2025 and 2026 and ranks 42nd on The World's 50 Best Hotels for 2026.

The hotel has operated since 1876 and is closely associated with the 1949 film The Third Man. Its Rote Bar and Grüne Bar dining rooms are not Michelin-starred, but both hold three Gault&Millau toques in the 2027 guide, per the hotel's own awards page.

Palais Coburg Residenz

Palais Coburg occupies a palace dating to 1844 on the old city fortifications, converted into a 34-suite hotel in 2003. It is listed on Leading Hotels of the World's own property page. The hotel's own restaurant, Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant, holds two Michelin stars (see below).

Altstadt Vienna

Altstadt Vienna, a 62-room townhouse hotel in the Spittelberg quarter filled with works by artists including Gilbert & George and Andy Warhol, is listed as a current member on Small Luxury Hotels of the World's own site. It has no in-house restaurant beyond a late bar, so it suits a reader who wants a design-led base rather than full hotel service. Worth knowing rather than a primary recommendation for most of this audience.

Rosewood Vienna, which opened recently in the city, is rated Four-Star by Forbes Travel Guide and holds no LHW or SLH membership that could be confirmed at the time of writing. It is not recommended here on that basis, though worth revisiting once a current rating is confirmed.

Where to Eat: Vienna's Three-Starred Tables

Vienna holds two three-Michelin-star restaurants, more than any other Austrian city, per the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Austria's own list of starred restaurants.

Steirereck im Stadtpark

Steirereck holds three MICHELIN stars for 2026, confirmed directly on the restaurant's own MICHELIN Guide page. The Stadtpark setting and the kitchen, credited to Heinz Reitbauer and Michael Bauböck, are described by Michelin's own inspectors as creative and often surprising.

Amador

Amador also holds three MICHELIN stars for 2026, per its own MICHELIN Guide page, under chef Juan Amador.

Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant

Inside Palais Coburg, Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant holds two MICHELIN stars for 2026, confirmed via the restaurant's own MICHELIN Guide listing, with Silvio Nickol as executive chef and Florian Daube as head chef. Staying at Palais Coburg puts this kitchen downstairs from your room.

What to Know: Markets and the Opera Season

Vienna runs several Christmas markets simultaneously through December, each with its own character and dates confirmed via the Austrian National Tourist Office's own listing. The market at Rathausplatz, in front of City Hall, runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026.

The Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace runs 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, the longest of the main markets. Spittelberg, a smaller and more design-focused market near Altstadt Vienna, runs 13 November to 23 December 2026, and the Belvedere K&K Christmas Market, at the Belvedere Palace, runs 20 November to 31 December 2026.

The Vienna State Opera's December 2026 calendar, published directly on the opera house's own site, includes 18 dates across the month. Highlights include Ariadne auf Naxos on 1 and 5 December, Die Zauberflöte on 12, 15 and 18 December, and the premiere of La Damnation de Faust on 17 December, with further performances through to 29 December.

The house closes the year with Die Fledermaus on 31 December at 18:00. Book directly through the opera house once your travel dates are fixed.

If your Vienna trip is a family one over the festive period, our Group Charter service is worth discussing at the enquiry stage, since opera tickets, market visits and restaurant bookings for a larger party are all easier to coordinate once your travel dates are confirmed.

Beyond the Markets: The Spanish Riding School, Privately

Away from the markets and the opera calendar, the Spanish Riding School's own private event package, confirmed directly on the school's website, moves a small group out of the public stands entirely. It starts with an aperitif in the school's private salons, where staff relay the institution's history, then continues through a "Secret Door" to reserved seats in the court box for the performance, followed by a visit to the stables and tack room. This sits apart from the standard Performance and Morning Exercise tickets open to any visitor, and is arranged directly with the school rather than through a general ticket desk.
